Pick Your Own

Scenes from a local U-Pick strawberry farm with 4 boys...

Man, white strawberries are sour.

Dude, white strawberries are really hard.

Sick, the really dark reddy brown ones are rotten.

Stop, I think that strawberry hit my EYE.

Wait, if you throw another one I will catch it with my mouth.

Boys! Is anyone picking strawberries? Let me tell ya, come December, strawberry sundaes will be for PICKERS, not LOAFERS!

Smack! Dude, QUIT throwing strawberries. Seriously!

I don't whike strawberries.... (whiny voice)

Ugh, I feel sick, I ate like about like 50 strawberries like already.

How many strawberries do you have? I have more. I have lots more. See? I'm BEATING you.

Hey, watch. I can throw a curve ball with this one.

Stop it, you hit me again! Jerk! Moooom, he got strawberry guts on my shirt!

Boys! If you don't stop throwing strawberries you are going to sit in the VAN! No wait, YOU are going to pick another 4 quarts of strawberries while I SIT IN THE VAN! .

Holy Crap! Look at that bug. Sick. I think it's dead. Mom, do you want me to pick this strawberry with the dead bug on it?

Mom? Hey! Mom? Can we make strawberry sundaes tonight? Can you make us strawberry sauce for pancakes tomorrow? What else can we make with strawberries? Oh, yeah! I want some of the yogurt with strawberries like a parfait. And, can you put some in the Popsicle molds? That would be good too. I'm hungry. What's for dinner?

Best line of the whole day: Wow, that strawberry tasted like NATURE.

Our haul? 12 quarts of strawberries - yes, the picture is the real deal. Side splitting humor? Endless. Boys will be boys.

Hilarious! Now, can you get the boys to help you perserve the strawberries? If you can, then I need your tips to get my girls to help can our berries!

Haha! At our stand, my grandmother always says she should weigh the kids before and after picking, and charge for the weight gain.

Strawberries are my absolute favorite. Right after I was born, my mother's best friend brought her quarts and quarts of them, and I haven't been able to get enough sense!

Can't wait to see what all you make.

Too funny. Such boys you have. I have visions of my life in 5 years. Thanks for the amusing glipse into the future. Looks pretty good.

HILARIOUS!

Oh the joys of summer. Are you counting down the days until they go back to school? ;)

BBN - Well, they help preserve the berries. In their stomachs! We easily ate two of the quarts already!

Farmer's Daughter - Oh, dear, if they would have weighed my one son on the way out, he would be a quart heavier. Though, I think that's the magic of Upick - eating something right from the field.

Heather - They had fun! Me, well, I had fun, but it's a little like cat herding...

Letter - I made some strawberry sauce for topping pancakes and ice cream. I froze two gallon freezer bags full for smoothies and shakes in the winter. Now, I need to figure out what to do with the last 4 quarts...

GB - check back with me in 5 years and let me know how amused you are! I spent most of last night either preserving berries or cleaning berry gunk off of shoes, shirts and faces!!

Arduous - 2 months, 5 days until the first day of school. :o)

this is so funny...we used to have a blueberry picking place right next to our house when I was growing up and he always checked our tongue color when we were leaving :) your boys sound hillarious!

That sounds like a highly entertaining summer day. When my sister and I were kids, our mom took us to pick strawberries every year. I remember having a "one for the basket and one for my tummy" mentality, so it's probably good the farmers don't weigh kids on the way in and out.

Unfortunately for me, but fortunately for the farmers, the u-pick places around here have been particularly slammed with customers this year. The place I wanted to go has been all picked out by 8:30 or 9:00 am, and they're only open every other day. Apparently the word is out that picking your own is much more fun!

Thanks for the reminder. Heading to the Sunday farmer's market right now hoping those organic strawberry farmers will be there...
